Maps are fundamental communication tools that have been around for centuries. Many assume that cartography is now ‘easy,’ that with the abundance of digital tools at our disposal a good map can be made quickly and cheaply. However, a quick and cheap map is rarely a good map. At the most basic level, a map needs to communicate a single idea clearly. This requires thought, experience, and restraint; the process is both science and art. We have been balancing the two since we began making maps more than 20 years ago.
